Advanced Surgery

When surgery is recommended, it's comforting to know that our physicians are the area leaders in minimally invasive surgery (MIS). Patients benefit from minimally invasive surgery due to smaller incisions, shorter recovery time and less pain than experienced with traditional open surgeries. The Center for Advanced Surgery and Technology (CASAT) at Trinity Mother Frances Hospitals and Clinics houses a surgical program that is a recognized leader in endoscopy and minimally invasive surgery.

Through advances in technology, many urologic procedures can now be performed using minimally invasive techniques, reducing the need for pain medication and speeding recovery, so patients can return to normal activities faster and experience fewer complications.

Benefits of Minimally Invasive Procedures
By using MIS techniques, CASAT offers our patients many benefits over traditional surgeries.

  • Less pain - MIS procedures cause less post-operative pain and discomfort. Studies have shown that patients undergoing MIS procedures report less pain and require smaller doses of pain relievers than patients undergoing traditional surgeries.
  • Shorter hospital stay - Patients who undergo MIS procedures are usually able to go home sooner and, in many cases, the patient is able to return to normal activities and work more quickly.
  • Smaller incisions - MIS procedures require smaller incisions, which mean smaller, less noticeable scars. The scars that do form as a result of MIS typically have a less jagged edge and are less noticeable.
  • Less injury to tissue and reduced side effects - Most traditional surgeries require a long incision to be made through muscle. Because there are no long incisions in MIS, surgeons often do not have to cut through muscles to complete the procedure—leading to less tissue damage and quicker recovery.
  • Higher accuracy rate - Because MIS procedures use video-assisted equipment, the surgeon has better visualization and magnification of internal organs and structure. For patients, this translates into a more accurate and definitive procedure.
